Coach your Staff to Succeed At its best, coaching helps employees substantially improve their performance. Follow these three steps: (1) Ask the worker to pinpoint a performance problem. Your coaching will have greater impact if the employee - not you- identifies what needs to improve. (2) Set expectations for improvement together. Let the employee drive the process and commit to attaining measurable objectives. Example: Rather than say, "You must master this process by Friday," say, "You need to master this process quickly, so what kind of goal should we establish?"
(3) Monitor progress. Make periodic visits to observe and give feedback. Mix praise with criticism. Example: Say, "I see you caught on fast and that's great! One thing you need to work on is"
