ALTERNATIVES TO SUSPENSION at BHS
Late last year a committee of local volunteers was formed to address the issue of external suspension as a disciplinary policy at Bolingbrook High School, because statistics and experience have shown that suspension has no positive effect on students. In fact, it actually has a detrimental effect instead, especially on academic success.
This committee was made up of school personnel, providers of youth services, and community leaders. The Chamber was represented by its president at the time.
Over a number of months, the committee developed the Alternatives to Suspension (ATS) program, which focuses on the use of volunteer efforts and community service to re-establish student character and improve overall student behavior.
Recognizing that the youth of today are the workforce of tomorrow, the Chamber has chosen to support this program and make it available to our members. Our individual member businesses have the opportunity to provide the community service component of this program by offering the participating students tasks to perform at their places of businesses, such as preparing a mailing, sorting, or other such tasks.
If you are interested in participating in the Alternatives to Suspension program at Bolingbrook High School, you may find complete details about the program by clicking on the ATS Document link to the upper left of this page.
