Message from the Executive Director-

Dear Members:

The Pathways Parade was a smashing success with the Bolingbrook Chamber Float taking the 1st Place Trophy once again.  I want to especially thank Toni Greathouse for her efforts in coordinating another "winner" for the Chamber.  Toni's enthusiasm never ceases to amaze me.

This Fall's Job Fair was held at the Holiday Inn in Bolingbrook.  There were over 20 employers represented and approximately 300 individuals seeking employment.  Special thanks to Janet Burnett, Jan Peterson and their committee for coordinating the entire event; and to the many volunteers  who worked at the Job Fair.   A list of all the companies who were in attendance is located in the Job Fair '98 article on page 3 of this newsletter.

Getting and keeping good employees is a major issue for most companies.  One of the key elements to keeping good employees is to make them feel special.  I offer you the following tips from the US Chamber:

1.  Treat employees as well as you treat       your customers.
2.  Say "Thank You" and mention when  a job is well done.
3.  Use employees ideas and give them  credit.
4.  Show employees that their ideas are  listened to and have an impact  on the business.
5.  Put a letter of recognition in their permanent record.

(E.D. Message continued)

6.  Show your appreciation through  spontaneous gestures, like  treats or a movie ticket.
7.  Allow for creativity in getting a job  done.
8.  Be clear on what you want done and  then trust them to do the job.
9.  When you make a mistake, admit it  and take responsibility.
10. When an employee makes a mis- take use it as a learning
experience and move on.

Employees are the most valuable assets a business has.  If treated correctly they can provide a great return on your investment.

Sincerely,

Peg Halsey
